Scope and Contents
The Kurt Wiese papers represent a major portion of Wiese’s body of work produced as an illustrator and author of American children's literature. The collection is comprised of original children's book production material and personal papers.
The children’s book production material series includes Wiese’s original artwork and related preparatory materials used in the creation of children’s books written by Wiese and other authors. The bulk of the artwork is comprised of ink and litho crayon illustrations on paper and board, but it also includes press-ready color-separated art on acetate, dummies, cover art, sketches, and proofs. It also includes typed manuscripts, as well as publisher and author correspondence.

Born on April 22, 1887 in Minden, Germany, Kurt Wiese led a colorful life before he became a children’s book illustrator.
He wanted to be an artist, but few people made their living that way, so he became an exporter in China. From 1909 to 1915, he traveled throughout the Far East. When World War I began, he was captured by the Japanese, who sent him to a prisoner-of-war camp in Australia. That’s when he began to take his art seriously.
After being released at the end of the war, Wiese returned to Germany, but the economy was so bad that he followed many other Germans in moving to Brazil. He began his illustration career there.
In 1927, Wiese moved to the United States, where he married Gertrude Hansen in 1930. They lived on a farm in Frenchtown, New Jersey for the rest of their lives. His first critical success was Felix Salten’s Bambi in 1929.

Kurt Wiese
Kurt Wiese (* 22. April1887 in Minden; † 27. Mai1974 in Idell, New Jersey) war ein deutschstämmiger Illustrator, der ungefähr 300 Kinderbücher illustriert hat.
Er ging im Rahmen seiner kaufmännischen Ausbildung nach China, wo er während des Ersten Weltkrieges in Gefangenschaft geriet. Viele seiner Illustrationen sind daher chinesisch geprägt. U. a. illustrierte er die „Freddy Books“ mit der Hauptfigur Schweinchen Freddy. 1927 emigrierte er in die USA, heiratete dort Gertrude Hansen und ließ sich in New Jersey nieder, wo er bis zu seinem Tode eine Farm bewirtschaftete.
