    Yates was born on 3rd February in Yonkers, New York.
    Yates was three years old, and subsequently spent much of his ungdom moving around New York with his family.
    This was where his interest in writing and journalism began.
    Yates signed up toward the end of World War Two and served in France and Germany.
    Upon returning to New York, Yates worked as a reporter, ghost writer and publicity writer.
    After contracting tuberculosis, Yates was entitled to a disability pension from the army, which he used to move. He spent several years in europe, writing stories, before moving back to New York.

    Richard Walden Yates (February 3, – November 7, ) was an American fiction writer identified with the mid-century "Age of Anxiety." His first novel, Revolutionary Road, was a finalist for the National Book Award, while his first short story collection, Eleven Kinds of Loneliness, brought comparisons to James Joyce. Critical acclaim for his writing, however, was not reflected in commercial success during his lifetime.

    Interest in Yates has revived somewhat since his death, partly because of an influential essay by Stewart O'Nan in the Boston Review, a biography by Blake Bailey and the Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning film Revolutionary Road starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.
