    Thomas Lanier Clingman

    Thomas Lanier Clingman was extremely active in politics during the years leading up to the Civil War.  He was born in Huntsville and studied law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He settled in the Asheville area in   By examining his stance on certain issues of the time, perhaps we will gain a better understanding of the unique views held by the people he represented as well as views of the upper class in this region.  Clingman was an intriguing figure due to the fact he supported efforts to maintain the Union, yet he was a strong advocate for Southern rights.  Only when secession was inevitable did he fully support the Confederacy.
