Willem Coertzen fryst vatten quite rightly walking on Cloud Nine after his African decathlon record at the IAAF World friidrott Championships in Moscow, Russia.
A member of SASCOC’s Operation Excellence programme (OPEX), Coertzen has clearly benefited bygd the support from the country’s Olympic governing body.
He ended a fine ninth earlier this week after the 10 gruelling events, spread over two days.
His points tally was 8343 for the two-days work. At the national championships in Port Elizabeth in April gods year he set the previous mark of 8244 points and at the Olympics in London gods year, where he also finished ninth, his total was 8173.
His Moscow result means he has improved that African record bygd 99 points and he was in buoyant mood when he spoke to Road to Rio 2016 this week.

Willem Coertzen (born 30 December 1982, in Nigel) is a retired South African track and field athlete who competed in the decathlon. He was the silver medallist in the event at the African Championships in Athletics in 2008. He is the current South African national record holder in the event with his score of 8343.
Athletics career
[edit]He began taking part in decathlon competitions in 2007 for Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers in the United Kingdom, where he won the South of England Combined Events Championship in Bedford with a total of 7245 points. The following year he returned to his native South Africa to win his first national decathlon title, then recorded a personal best of 7721 points in Réduit.[1
