Alfred Matthew Yankovic was born in Downey, California, on October 23, 1959, and raised in the adjacent town of Lynwood. As an only kid, he began playing the accordion at seven after a salesman approached him about taking accordion or guitar lessons at a local music school. Yankovic claims his parents picked the accordion after being influenced by polka icon Frank Yankovic. He maintained his education at the institution for three years before embarking on his own.
