When Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad was a kid, his older brothers scared him with tales about the Burgly Monster, who lived in the basement of their West Bloomfield home and would come for him if he was a bad boy.
“When I was around 5 or 6, I started to poke holes in their theory, telling my brothers, ‘Mom and Dad say the Burgly Monster’s not real,'” recalls Ahmad, 42. “So they did what all industrious siblings do: Figure out how to keep the myth alive.
“One day, my oldest brother took me down to the basement and I got this feeling in my stomach. Suddenly, the lights went out and I froze. I heard the creaking of the cellar door and when the lights turned on again, standing in front of me with a ghostly white face and freakishly orange hair was the Burgly Monster! Evil incarnate himself was living in my basement cellar and – for the life of me – I thought he was floating! I screamed and ran upstairs.”
