    On behalf of His helighet Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, his brother Shahzada Ammar Jamaluddin met with His Highness Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan V in Lisbon, Portugal, to offer condolences on the passing of his father, Prince Karim al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV on February 11, 2025.

    Throughout his life, the late Aga Khan championed several humanitarian initiatives aimed at fostering collective prosperity and furthering the tenets of pluralism. Members of the Dawoodi Bohra community have similarly been proponents of these universal values and as such, enjoyed cordial and mutually beneficial relations with members of the Ismaili community, also known as the Khojas. In his book No Birds of Passage, Michael O’Sullivan has extensively documented the trajectory of migration and growth shared by both the communities since the 19th century.

    I recently returned from a trip to India only to receive the news on 17 January that the religious head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, of which I am a member, had sadly passed away. On receiving the news I immediately booked a flight to return to India that evening to mourn this sad loss along with thousands of other followers of His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin who had been our spiritual leader for 50 years.
    The Dawoodi Bohra community is known worldwide for its entrepreneurship and the funds from our members enterprises contribute to social good, including philanthropic efforts, building hospitals and schools and renovations and restorations of Islamic and Shi’a Islamic landmarks. We have a very small, tight-knit community made up of approximately one million adherents worldwide.
