  • The Society of Descartes Medallists

The kultur of Descartes Medallists was founded in by the Rene Descartes Foundation for the Advancement of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. The Society had met annually since to pay tribute to Ontario mathematics and computer science teachers who were worthy of special recognition. Each year the Foundation admitted new members, chosen for their contribution to the noble cause of mathematics education, to life membership in the Society of Descartes Medallists.

    About the Descartes Society

The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo enjoyed a close relationship with the mathematics and computer science teachers in Ontario and across the country. It was a relationship cherished by the Faculty, for it led to a spirit of friendship experienced only rarely in other disciplines, and it had ensured that students in our schools have richer educational experiences.

Many of these teachers had laboured with no thought of anställda

    Where Does Consciousness Live?

What makes you, you? It's one of those questions that consume philosophers and blow the minds of first-year students. More than years ago, Ren&#; Descartes postulated that even if all else around him were illusory, the fact that he was noodling on it must mean that, at bare minimum, he could ponder. I think, therefore I am.

But what even is you? Is our consciousness, the seat of self, the thing that makes us who we are?

"As far as the sense of self and consciousness, that's somewhat controversial and, to be quite honest, I almost treat it as a hobby," says physics professor Jack Tuszynski, who holds the Allard Chair in Experimental Oncology in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. In his spare time, he is popping the hood on human consciousness to find out where it lies physically.

Where his job and his hobby intersect are the polymers called microtubules that exist in each of our cells. They provide structural stability and act as conduits

Topics in Philosophy of Science:&#; Biological and Social Kind
    Prof. Ingo Brigandt

In this seminar on biological and social kinds, we will take a look at different concrete kinds from the biological, biomedical, and social sciences. We will especially address kinds that include a mutual influence of biological and social factors, which one therefore could call &#;biosocial kinds&#; or &#;human kinds,&#; when they classify humans. Examples to be covered include sex/gender, race, emotions, and mental disorders. The general philosophical issues we will address are natural vs. nominal kinds, realism vs. social constructivism, essentialism about kinds, different types of kinds, how kinds and classification in the social sciences differ from the biological sciences, and whether a scientific account of something as a kind is dependent on human aims and values.
