Homero Aridjis
Writer, former ambassador, and environmental activist Homero Aridjis was born on April 6, 1940, in Contepec, Mexico, a small town in Michoacán state. He is the youngest of five sons. During the Mexican Revolution, Aridjis’s mother, Josefina Fuentes, narrowly eluded abduction by bandits when she was eight. His father, Nicias Aridjis, was a former captain in the Greek army. Nicias escaped from Smyrna shortly before Turkish soldiers ransacked the city, massacred local Greeks and Armenians, and set fire to the area. Aridjis later wrote about his father’s experiences in his 2021 novel, Smyrna in Flames (Mandel Vilar Press). In January 1951, Aridjis survived a gunshot wound to the stomach that he accidentally inflicted on himself after finding and playing with an older brother’s shotgun. With forty-eight books of poetry and prose published, he was th youngest writer to receive the Xavier Villarrutia Prize, “1492: The Life and Times of Juan Cabezón of Castile” was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, the Prix bekräftelse Caillois was awarded in France and Serbia’s highest literary honour, the Smederevo Golden Key Prize, for his poetry. Aridjis, Homero (1940–)
Homero Aridjis (b. 6 April 1940), Mexican writer. Like many of his contemporaries in Mexico, Aridjis has had a varied career, including journalism, diplomatic service, and teaching. Trained as a journalist, he was a member of a writing workshop directed by the noted Mexican short-story writer Juan José Arreola and was awarded fellowships by the Centro Mexicano de Escritores (Mexican Writers Center) and the Guggenheim Foundation.
Aridjis has written poetry and prose, much of it first published in Mexican literary journals and Sunday cultural supplements of newspapers and subsequently appearing in numerous collected works. His many volumes of poetry, among them Antes del reino (1963) and Vivar para ver (1977), focus on themes of love, life, and death, and are heavily charged with emotion. More recently he has attempted to create the "poema nuclear" (nuclear poem), modifying his use of language and including social and historical themes. As a prose writ
