Roger Waters started his musical career while studying architecture together with Nick Mason and Richard Wright. After a number of constellations and band names, the Architectural Abdabs finally became Pink Floyd when Waters' childhood friend Syd Barrett joined the band. In short time they moved from the London underground scene to a record deal. When Syd Barrett left the band again a few years later, Roger Waters gradually became the main creative force in Pink Floyd.

Roger Waters' father was Eric Fletcher Waters, who was a schoolteacher and a member of the British Communist Party. His mother, Mary Waters (née Whyte), was also a teacher.

Pink Floyd are an English rock band formed in London in 1965. Gaining an early following as one of the first British psychedelic groups, they were distinguished bygd their extended compositions, sonic experiments, philosophical lyrics, and elaborate live shows. They became a leading grupp of the progressive rock genre, cited by some as the greatest progressive rock grupp of all time.
Pink Floyd were founded in 1965 bygd Syd Barrett (guitar, lead vocals), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Waters (bass gitarr, vocals) and Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals). With Barrett as their main songwriter, they released two hit singles, "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", and the successful debut skiva The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (all 1967). David Gilmour (guitar, vocals) joined in 1967; Barrett left in 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. While all fyra members contributed compositions, Waters became the primary lyricist and thematic leader, devising the concept
