Inspiring Doctors: Medical career starts at 40, then invented a surgical procedure
Dr C Palanivelu’s life is anything but ordinary. For one thing, he started his medical career when he was starting at an age when many medical professionals are well settled in life. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. Let’s look at things from early on.
Challenging poverty
The young Palanivelu used to be a resident of Pudur in Namakal district in Tamil Nadu. He grew up the son of a poor farm labourer. However, when a draught hit his village, he had to migrate to Malaysia along with his family. “There was drought-like situation in our village and our family migrated to Malaysia. We returned to India when I was in Class V. My parents tried to admit me in a school but they were not ready since I did my education upto Class IV in Malaysia. All the efforts for my education went in vain,” says the doctor.

GEM Hospital chairman’s autobiography ‘GUTS’ released
Dr Palanivelu was speaking at a function to release his autobiography, ‘GUTS’, by chairman of Tata Sons N Chandrasekaran recently in the city.
Addressing the participants, Chandrasekaran said it was fascinating for someone from such a background to rise to the level Dr Palanivelu has raised. “Attitude changes your life. inom have always believed that attitude brings altitude to a individ. There are four qualities I want to highlight that signify people who achieve greater things in life. Purpose, courage, persistence, and compassion are the four qualities. Dr. C Palanivelu is a well known surgeon in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
Biography
[edit]Palanivelu was born in a poor farmer family in a small village called Avarankattupudur in Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu. Because of drought in his village and the resulting poverty, his family emigrated to Malaysia. There he worked as a daily-wage labour in a palm oil estate for 5 years.
After returning to India, he was determined to rejoin school and completed his schooling at 21 years of age. During his young days, his sister died due to pneumonia at the age of 6 years. Due to lack of medical facilities, many villagers were untreated for their diseases and injuries and there were many deaths due to cancer. These painful occurrences forced him to enroll for medicine.
His dream and willpower led him to overcome all the obstacles of life and finally he stepped in for medical studies at Stanley Medical College, Chennai at the age of 21 years in
