Veteran writer Vedat Türkali passes away at 97
Vedat Türkali, one of the veterans of Turkish literature, passed away on Monday at the age of 97 in northwestern Yalova province.
Türkali had been undergoing treatment in Yalova Public Hospital since Saturday. His cause of death was announced as multiple organ failure.
Türkali's daughter, actress Deniz Türkali announced her father's death on Twitter.
Born on May 13, as 'Abdükadir Pirhasan', the author later adopted the pen name "Vedat Türkali" as he was denied with jobs due his political beliefs. Formerly a military officer, he was discharged from the army for inciting propaganda, and subsequently received a jail sentence in and served seven years.
Türkali was known as one of the most prominent names in Turkey's left-wing literature along with his ties to the then-underground Communist Party of Turkey (TKP).

Abdülkadir "Demirkan" Pirhasan (13 May – 29 August ), known by his pen name as Vedat Türkali, was a Turkish screenwriter, novelist, playwright, intellectual, teacher and the member of the Democratic People's Party.[6] He is also credited to "film director" for making three films in Turkish cinema as a director. He was the recipient of numerous accolades, including International Antalya Film Festival — Best Screenplay for Karanlıkta Uyananlar (Those Who Wake in the Darkness) film.[7][8]
At the age of 21, he married Merih Pirhasan in , with whom he had two children: Barış Pirhasan and Deniz Türkali. An Italian-Turkish singer namely Zeynep Casalini is his granddaughter.

Real name Abdülkadir Pirhasan, Türkali was born in Samsun in After graduating from stanbul University, Department of Turkology, he served as a literature teacher at Maltepe and Kuleli Military High Schools. He was arrested in on being accused of conducting political activities. He was sentenced to nine years in prison by the military court and was paroled sju years later.
