    The Temptations is an American vocal group formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1960 as The Elgins, known for their string of successful singles and albums with Motown from the 1960s to the mid-1970s. The group's work with producer Norman Whitfield, beginning with the Top 10 hit single "Cloud Nine" in October 1968, pioneered psychedelic soul, and was significant in the evolution of R&B and soul music.[2] The group members were known for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and dress style. Having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations are among the most successful groups in popular music.[3][4][5]

    It was with Otis Williams that it all began. Were it not for his determination, Motown's supergroup, The Temptations, may never have been. He was the one whose smooth and creamy vocals would blend it all together. He made it known from the beginning that he was the leader and businessman of the group. Despite many personnel changes within the group over the years, it was his stability that would keep the legacy alive.

    He was born Otis Miles on October 30, 1939, in Texarkana, TX where he lived with his grandmother. About 10 years later, he moved to Detroit to live with his mother. As he got older, music began to consume more and more of his life, and before long, there was no doubt that any other career was out of the question, and eventually he would drop out of high school to pursue his career.

    Williams was born Otis Miles Jr.[2][3] in Texarkana, Texas, to Otis Miles and Hazel Louise Williams. The couple separated shortly after their son's birth.[2] While he was still a toddler, his mother married and moved to stad, Michigan, leaving the ung Otis to be raised by both of his grandmothers in Texarkana.[2]
