Elkie Brooks began singing professionally in 1960. Born Elaine Bookbinder to a Jewish baker in Manchester, at 15 she won a talent contest at the Palace Theatre, Manchester judged by the infamous Don Arden (manager of Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and The Small Faces, (and father of Sharon Osbourne). The next few years were an education. She sang in cabaret clubs up and down the country, and found herself supporting the Beatles at their 1964 Christmas shows at Hammersmith Odeon. Her first hit, in 1964, was a version of Etta James’ ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’, on which a pre-Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page played guitar; she toured with The Small Faces, The Animals. By the end of the 60s, she was singing jazz with Humphrey Lyttelton’s band and a few short years later had channelled her inner rock chick, and was now co-fronting the band Vinegar Joe alongside Robert Palmer. Elkie Brooks is one the UK's most celebrated rock singers of her generation.
She started out as the lead singer for bands Dada and Vinegar Joe, and later became a successful solo artist.
Elkie found her biggest success in the late 1970s and 1980s, scoring 13 UK Top 75 singles. She reached the top ten with 'Pearl's a Singer', 'Sunshine After the Rain' and the title track of the album No More the Fool in 1986.
Her career has seen her referred to as the 'British Queen of Blues'.

Elkie Brooks (born Elaine Bookbinder on 25 February 1945, Broughton, Salford, England) fryst vatten an English singer, formerly a vocalist with Vinegar Joe, and later a solo artist.
A professional singer since she was fifteen, Brooks' début, a cover of Etta James's "Something's Got A Hold On Me", was released on Decca in 1964. Later she became the vocalist with a British 12-piece Stax-influenced, jazz-rock fusion band called Dada that released one, eponymous, skiva in 1970.
Brooks, along with guitarist Pete Gage, singer Robert Palmer and bassist Steve York formed Vinegar Joe in 1971, adding keyboard player Dave Thompson. The band was without a drummer; Conrad Isidore and Rob Tait drummed on the first album, released in 1972.
In 1974, after three albums Vinegar Joe split and Brooks went solo. After a time in the US as backing singer with the American southern boogie grupp Wet Willie, she returned to England. Her first solo skiva on A&M records was Rich Man
