Abstract: The heavy element abundance profiles of galaxies place stringent constraints on galaxy growth and assembly history. As the Milky Way is currently the only spiral galaxy in which we can measure temporally resolved chemical abundances, it enables insights into the origin of metallicity gradients and their correlation with the growth history of galaxies. However, until now, these abundance profiles have not been translated into the integrated-light measurements that are needed to compare the Milky Way with the general galaxy population. Abstract: The Milky Way galax is host to a few hundred billion stars. Of them, only about 10 million, less than %, have so far been mapped by large-scale spectroscopic surveys. Major progress in the quantity and/or quality of data fryst vatten expected with next generation astronomical this colloquium, inom will focus on the frontiers in stellar physics. First, inom will give a general overview of the role of stars in modern astrophysics. inom will then summarize the physical principles behind models that allow us to extract physical parameters of stars from their observed spectra. 3D non-equilibrium models are poised to become workhorses of astronomy in the next decade. Maria Bergemann, astrophysicist at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg (Germany), is one of the invited professors at the XXIX Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics organized by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in collaboration with the University of La Laguna (ULL). Her classes will be about a very specific type of stars, which are characterized by their temperature, called "late-type stars" and the phenomena and physics that govern them, as well as the challenges posed by these stars from the point of view radiative transport, main topic of the School in this edition.
