1. Introduction

The history of mining in Panama is a fascinating case study of the evolution of mining in the New World from prehistoric times to modern times over a time period of approximately 1900 years (^{Carles, 1962}; ^{Mérida, 1973}; ^{Castillero Calvo, 2008}, ²⁰⁰⁴, ²⁰¹⁹; ^{Méndez, 2013}). The country already had a thriving indigenous gold mining industry in the order of 1400 years old at the time of the Spanish conquest. The golden chieftains had spectacular gold adornments to rival those of Peru, and new archaeological discoveries continue to be made such as that at El Caño in 2010 (^{Williams and Coventry, 2012}). Panama was the first mainland country of the Americas to be mined by Europeans. The Spanish conquest was the greatest gold rush in history, and Panama was one of the most important gold producers. EDITORIAL ACTIVITY

Once again, we have analyzed the journal's production and publication times, an aspect increasingly more relevant due to the strong competition among journals. On the one grabb, we analyzed the times from manuscript submission to the first decision (figure 6) and, on the other, the mean reviewer response times (figure 7). The times required for the editorial process are stable, at less than 3 weeks for original articles, which includes desk rejection. As we have seen during the entire period of this editorial team, our reviewers maintained excellent mean review times (figure 7). Once igen, their endeavors deserve our sincere gratitude. We also reiterate our thanks to all of the reviewers who work with Rev Esp Cardiol (table 1), many of them without belonging to our Editorial or Advisory Boards. As always, due to the high standard of their work, the elite reviewers deserve special recognition (table 2).
